The 58-story, 1,401-ft.-tall One Vanderbilt, a skyline-defining office building designed by Kohn Pederson Fox and developed by SL Green Realty Corp. in New York City’s (NYC) Midtown, has passed the halfway point and is on track for topping out in August 2019, New York YIMBY reports. Installation of the high-performance, glazed white terracotta façade manufactured by Boston Valley is underway, and construction of the 1.75-million-sq.-ft. tower is progressing at approximately three floors per month. Due to tiered, 300-ft.-tall setbacks, construction of the top floors is expected to take longer. Occupying a full city block between 42nd and 43rd streets and Madison and Vanderbilt avenues, One Vanderbilt will also boast a multistory public observation deck.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is reinvigorating its Height and Data Committee and seeking new members to join under the new chair, Scott Duncan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Duncan has had numerous accolades, responsibilities and published works throughout his 16-year tenure at SOM. CTBUH described the committee as having recently "influenced many compelling research endeavors and prompted provocative conversations with the public about the nature of tall buildings and the trends surrounding them." It now seeks to embrace a greater diversity of disciplines and geographies with the goal of not only improving its outputs, but also broadening its mission to incorporate a wider set of responsibilities. Those interested in becoming members of the committee should submit a maximum one-page application here through August 30.

Specialty contractor Universal Builders Supply, Inc. (UBS) has implemented wireless technology from Smart Call Systems LLC in its hoist cars. UBS said it is now in lifts at construction sites throughout Manhattan, New York. The technology includes the Wireless Call System, which can remotely monitor the location of hoist cars in real time with a mobile app, and the Wireless Emergency Stem for construction sites comprised of emergency boxes on every floor with a button to press in the event of a crisis. "We worked with Smart Call directly to trial these new systems, and, having tested them, found that this technology [creates] a seamless hoisting experience, which we are excited to share with the industry,” UBS President Chris Evans commented.
