SCHINDLER TO RAMP UP MANUFACTURING, R&D IN INDIA
Schindler India plans to invest approximately US$26.5 million to expand its vertical-transportation manufacturing facilities and improve R&D in the Chakan Industrial Area of Pune, India, part of a larger, nearly US$80-million outlay over six years. By 2019, Schindler India plans to have an annual capacity of 17,500 elevators and 1,200 escalators, and notes it has already invested approximately US$67 million in setting up a factory, R&D center and 71-m-tall test tower with eight shafts under the Make in India initiative.
HIGH-TECH HANDLING NYC ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION
New York City (NYC)-based Hi-Tech is handling the modernization of six elevators at 461 Fifth Avenue in NYC, a 28-story office/retail tower owned by SL Green. Built in 1988, the building is undergoing a major renovation that includes its façade, lobby and elevator cabs. StructureTone is the general contractor and Gensler is the modernization architect. Hi-Tech will remove the old materials and install new glass panels supplied by McGrory Glass and manufactured by Hi-Tech. The project is set to start in the fourth quarter of this year.
HOTEL WORKER CRUSHED BY ELEVATOR IN THAILAND
A 32-year-old hotel employee in Patong, on the island of Phuket in Thailand, died as a result of being crushed by an elevator car, the Phuket Gazette reported on August 11. An investigation revealed the man jumped into an empty shaft to retrieve lost keys without telling anyone. Someone then called the elevator, which descended onto the man, crushing him. His body was taken to a hospital. Police called the incident a “tragic accident.”
36-STORY CO-LIVING CONCEPT WELIVE COMING TO SEATTLE
WeWork, a New York City-based company that provides shared work and living space, has its sights set on Seattle for its next WeLive co-living property — a 36-story building in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle, GeekWire reports. The company operates four co-working locations in Seattle. WeLive properties, which feature all the beer, tea and coffee you can drink and high-speed Wi-Fi, are currently in Arlington, Virginia, and the Washington, D.C., area. People rent them from one day to one year. Being developed by Martin Selig Real Estate at 3rd Avenue and Lenora Street, the building will have approximately 380 apartments, co-working space, common areas and retail. Completion is anticipated in 2020, and pricing has not yet been set.
