RENOLD TO PROVIDE ESCALATOR DRIVES TO LONDON TUBE STATION
Renold Plc, headquartered in Manchester, U.K., has been awarded a contract to supply seven bespoke escalator drive packages to the London Tube's busy Holborn station. Each package includes a heavy-duty TW Series worm-gear unit, motor, brake and baseplate. Gearboxes will boast Renold's new leak-free design, which Renold states is "an important factor at underground stations for improved safety, reliability, reduced maintenance and a cleaner operating environment." The drive packages will be assembled at the Renold factory, undergo testing, be disassembled, then be delivered and reassembled onsite. The 14th busiest station in the London Underground, Holborn processes more than 60,000 passengers each weekday, or more than 40 million a year.
AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING JAKARTA ELEVATOR PLUNGE
Authorities continue to investigate a March 17 incident in which an overloaded elevator plunged from the third floor to the basement of a shopping mall in south Jakarta, Indonesia, resulting in 25 people being hospitalized, Netral News reports. While it is clear the unit was overloaded, it is unclear why it continued to descend despite a warning sound being issued and its doors not closing properly. As of March 19, 15 people remained hospitalized, primarily with broken bones.
MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC OPENS DALLAS-AREA BRANCH
Mitsubishi Electric Elevator & Escalator opened an office at 631 South Royal Lane in Coppell, Texas, to serve the growing Dallas-Fort Worth area. Noting a Dodge Data & Analytics report shows North Texas construction hit record numbers in 2016 with almost US$21 billion in new construction starts, Mitsubishi Electric said the office will be its ninth nationwide. It will initially have approximately 15 employees, but that is expected to increase to at least 50 in the next several years.
FIREFIGHTERS FREE CHILD’S HAND FROM ESCALATOR IN CHINA
Firefighters worked for approximately 20 min. to free a six-year-old boy’s hand from an escalator in Chongqing, China, on March 15, various news outlets, including the Daily Mail, report. The child was hospitalized with a broken wrist. The scene was captured on video and appears to show an outdoor escalator. Firefighters initially used an iron bar to try to pry open a gap. When that failed to work, they brought in a hydraulic spreader to complete the rescue.
