GAL ACQUIRES ELEVATOR CONTROLS OF CALIFORNIA
GAL Manufacturing Corp., headquartered in Bronx, New York, and a portfolio company of San Francisco's Golden Gate Capital, announced on June 7 it has acquired Sacramento, California-based Elevator Controls Corp. Established in 1986 by brothers Fernando and Francisco Ortiz, Elevator Controls provides elevator-control solutions, including the Pixel controller line, which GAL notes is a "highly regarded [product] that incorporates backward compatibility to eliminate board and software version issues and enable older equipment to be easily updated." Elevator Controls will continue to be led by the Ortiz brothers in Sacramento. GAL President and CEO Mark Boelhouwer said GAL looks forward to working with Fernando and Francisco Ortiz "as they assist in developing our controller product portfolio."
CECA 2019 CONVENTION LOCATION MOVES TO OTTAWA
The 2019 Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) Convention will be held on June 3-6 at the Hilton Lac-Leamy in the Canadian capital of Ottawa-Gatineau, Ontario, rather than Halifax, Novia Scotia, as originally planned, it was announced during the recent CECA Convention in Calgary. Construction on the Halifax hotel that was to host the event is behind schedule, and organizers could not be certain it would be complete in time for the convention. Co-hosts Regional Elevator and ECR are excited about bringing the convention to their city and explained that the new location boasts a scenic riverfront, casino gambling and entertainment. MANHATTAN SKYSCRAPER WINS CONSTRUCTION PERMITS
Construction permits have been approved for a skyscraper in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, New York YIMBY reports. The 639-ft.-tall, 46-story tower at 30 East 29th Street is being developed by the Rockefeller Group. It will have a total 226,350 sq. ft. of space, with 167,700 sq. ft. dedicated to the building's 123 residential units, which will range from studios to four-bedroom condos. Amenities will include a pool, fitness center, squash room, lobby and bicycle spaces. Residents will have access to two terraces divided by a 960-sq.-ft. entertainment space on the 31st floor. The Art Deco design is by CetraRuddy.
MIXED-USE HIGH RISE PLANNED IN CAMBODIA
Taiwanese development company Overseas Cambodia Investment Corp. is planning a 40-story, 178-m-tall mixed-use tower on Koh Pich, or Diamond Island, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Khmer Times reports. The high rise, which will be called Gia Tower, will include a hotel, offices and condominium units, and represents an investment of US$100 million. Chreck Soknim, CEO of local real-estate firm Century 21 Mekong, said the island is a great location for high-rise development. “The area is surrounded by water and has a nice view," he said. In 2017, the total value of construction projects in Cambodia reached $6.42 billion, which represented an increase of more than 22% over the previous year, the government reported.
