CO-OP CITY TAPS CHAMPION FOR MAINTENANCE, MODERNIZATION
Three-year-old Champion Elevator is taking on the maintenance and modernization of the elevators at Co-Op City, the largest cooperative housing development in the world, Mannreport Management recently reported. The modernization job totals US$36 million, plus a 24/7 maintenance contract for the 180 elevators in the Bronx, New York, development. Completed in 1973, it has more than 15,000 residential units in seven clusters of townhouses and 35 high rises, some of which are more than 30 stories tall with 500-fpm elevators. Its last modernization was at least 17 years ago. Work includes installation of nonproprietary equipment that will comply with 2020 door-interlock monitoring codes, as well as 2026 unintended-motion code requirements. Champion plans to use five repair teams, two testing teams and 24 modernization teams over the five-year modernization period.

KENCOR EARNS AQC ACCREDITATION FOR THE SECOND TIME

Launched in 1993, ABC's AQC recognizes construction firms that have documented their commitment in five areas of corporate responsibility: quality, safety, employee benefits, training and community relations/diversity. Kencor Chief Operating Officer John Dodds said, "As the first-ever elevator contractor to have received this award, we are dedicated and committed in our continual pursuit to perform as a world-class organization."

ALIMAK WINS ORDER FOR NORDIC REGION’S FUTURE TALLEST
Developer Serneke has ordered five construction hoists able to handle winds of up to 25 mps from Alimak Group for construction of the Nordic region's future tallest building, Karlatornet, in Gothenburg, Sweden, designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill (ELENET 720). Delivery is scheduled for March to October 2019 ahead of the building's completion in 2021. The order includes a MammothTM hoist with a payload of up to 5,500 kg. This is the first time the Mammoth will be used in Sweden. "Karlatornet will be a landmark building, and we are pleased to deliver the vertical-access solutions needed for the special requirements posed by the height and wind," Alimak Group CEO Tormod Gunsleiksrud said.

SEATTLE HIGH RISE SHIFTS FROM APARTMENT TO CONDO
Developers of SPIRE, a 41-story, residential high rise designed by VIA within sight of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, announced on June 25 the building’s 352 units will be for-sale condominiums rather than rental apartments, Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, which is co-developing SPIRE with Laconia Development, says. The change is in response to what Realogics Sotheby’s describes as “a paradigm shift in consumer trending from rent to buy.” It further notes more than 91% of the approximately 30,000 multifamily housing units being added downtown in the current decade were developed for rent. The SPIRE sales center is under construction at 2218 5th Avenue, just south of the development site at 600 Wall Street.
