IN MEMORIAM: ANDREW F. DUFFY, JR.
Andrew F. Duffy, Jr. of New York City (NYC) passed away on July 21 in Westerleigh, NYC, after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). An Army Reserve veteran who worked as a shipfitter at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and as a NYC building inspector, Duffy founded Richmond Elevator Co. Inc. in 1992 with brothers Steven and James. He was a seasoned traveler, having visited 81 countries. He is survived by his former wife of 27 years, Anne; daughters, Lorraine and Heather; son, Paul; four grandchildren; brothers, Robert, Thomas, James and Steven; and sister, Mary Ellen. Services were held in Staten Island in July. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to CurePSP.
CONTRACT AWARDED FOR DUBAI HIGH RISE
A construction contract has been awarded for a high-rise residential building in Dubai's Business Bay central business district, Global Construction Review (GCR) reports. Gulf Technical Construction Co. (GTCC), a subsidiary of Drake & Scull International PJSC, was chosen to provide construction services for the 34-story West Bay tower, a residential building that will feature 252 apartments. GTCC will provide construction, civil engineering, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing work on the tower under terms of the AED175-million (US$46.6-million) contract, which calls for completion of the work within 33 months. Business Bay is a 5.9-million-m2 area being developed as a commercial, residential and business cluster in the heart of Dubai.
ELEVATOR WORKER IN WISCONSIN DIES IN SHAFT FALL
A 63-year-old man who was performing maintenance on an elevator at the Androy Hotel in Superior, Wisconsin, died on August 16 after he unlocked an elevator door and stepped into an empty shaft, falling up to 20 ft. into the basement, various news outlets, including U.S. News and World Report, reported using information from the Associated Press. Hotel staff and others told police the elevator had been malfunctioning, and the incident remains under investigation.

The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) has announced its official app for its 2017 convention and expo, taking place at the Hyatt Regency & Orange County Convention Center in Orlando on September 11-14.
