280-M-TALL HOTEL TOWER IN TAIPEI INSPIRED BY BAMBOO
Curved edges, an angled tip and a grooved green façade distinguish Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel's (ACPV) design for the 280-m-tall Taipei Sky Tower (TST) planned by local developer Riant Capital Ltd. in the Xinyi shopping and financial district, dezeen reports. APVC will also design interiors for Park Hyatt Taipei, one of two Hyatt hotels that aim to occupy TST by 2020. The other, Taipei Andaz, will have a different designer so the hotels will have distinct identities. There will be 500 rooms, and the developer is optimistic based on surging numbers of tourists, expected to reach 19 million in 2020, and demand from the local wealthy elite.
DEVELOPER EYES AMAZON-SIZED PROJECT FOR ATLANTA
Los Angeles-based developer CIM Group is proposing a US$5-billion project in downtown Atlanta that would meet the office-space criteria for online retailer Amazon's second headquarters (HQ2), though it's not yet being pitched for that purpose, WABE-FM reports. Christopher Sciarrone, an architect working with the developer, discussed the project with an Atlanta business group on January 25. It is envisioned for an area of parking decks and vacant lots known locally as "The Gulch" and would include 18 buildings. Of these, 14 would be office buildings ranging from 70 to 500 ft. tall and providing 9.3 million sq. ft. of space, which Sciarrone said "would seem to" be in line with what Amazon requires. Also included are a 350-ft., 1,500-room hotel and three residential towers. Atlanta was recently named among 20 finalist metros for HQ2, but Sciarrone said developers hope to move forward regardless of Amazon's involvement.

Firefighters had to dismantle part of the escalator to free the man, who used a walker. He was hospitalized in serious condition.
