HIGH-RISE LIVING VERSUS HERITAGE IN LONDON
A 42-story, mixed-use tower under construction in London's Stratford district is drawing opposition from heritage proponents who say it blocks a view of St. Paul's Cathedral from Richmond Park, Building Design reports. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Manhattan Loft Gardens will house a 145-key hotel, approximately 250 residences, sky gardens, restaurants and retail. Proponents describe it as a step into the future representing London high-rise living, while opponents say it breaks a planning rule stating development take a back seat to the cathedral. An online petition against it has gathered more than 7,000 signatures.
