DRAMATIC RESCUE FROM FLOODED ELEVATOR IN TORONTO
Police officers in Toronto rescued two men from an elevator that flooded in an under-construction building in The Junction neighborhood during heavy rain on August 7, various news outlets, including CityNews, report. The men became trapped when the elevator in the building where they were working became stuck in the basement and filled nearly to the top with water. As the water began to rise, the men decided to break through the ceiling and use a cellphone to call for 911. Prior to this, the building owner and others tried unsuccessfully to pry the elevator doors open with a two-by-four. After feeling their way through the submerged basement, the officers were able to pry open the doors using crowbars. The men sustained no injuries.

COUNCIL REJECTS OPPOSITION TO PARIS TWIN-TOWER PROJECT
The Council of State has turned down appeals by property owners hoping to block construction of Hermitage Plaza, a pair of supertall towers in the La Défense district of Paris that the project's Russian developer hopes to have complete in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Le Parisien reports. Owners of nearby buildings filed objections to the EUR3-billion (US$3.5-billion) project, which would bring hundreds of luxury apartments, a five-star hotel, restaurants, an art gallery and student housing in the form of two 320-m-tall skyscrapers designed by architect Norman Foster. The developer has until the end of the year to comply with modifications to one of its construction permits.
