A US$320-million, 15-year overhaul of the Eiffel Tower in Paris will include its elevator system, part of which has original 1880s components, ArchDaily reports. Otis elevators were used on the north and south pillars, with French elevators serving the others, and a hydraulic elevator completing the journey to the top. Approximately US$21 million a year will be spent on upgrades to security, efficiency and visitor comfort. Brickell Flatiron, a 64-story residential tower, is forging ahead at 1001 South Miami Avenue, with a foundation pour having taken place in January, SkyRise Cities reports. Involving approximately 700 workers, 150 concrete trucks and 50 million lb. of concrete, the event marked a milestone for the latest Miami project with "Brickell" in its name. It is being developed by CMC Group and was designed by architect Luis Revuelta with interior design by Massimo Iosa Ghini and artwork by Julian Schnabel. Amenities such as a rooftop pool and resort-style spa will be plentiful in the tower, which is expected to open in 2019 and, in January, was approximately 60% sold.

LIFT BREAKDOWNS CURTAIL SIGMA’S SINGAPORE ACTIVITY
Malfunctioning lifts in public housing projects over the past several years have resulted in Sigma being banned from bidding on new work for Singapore’s Housing & Development Board (HDB), The Straits Times reports. Of the HDB’s approximately 24,000 lifts, Sigma has provided an estimated 3,500. The board states the breakdowns are due to misaligned doors and sensors. Sigma, a subsidiary of Otis, says it is addressing this issue with resources and manpower, as well as putting up signage on the proper use of lifts.
