VERTICAL-TRANSPORTATION UPGRADES AT INDIAN RAIL STATION
A busy rail station in southwestern India is in the midst of vertical-transportation upgrades, Indian newspapers report. Mysuru station, which handles approximately 25,000 passengers daily, saw two escalators at platforms 1 and 6 inaugurated by Southwestern Railway officials on November 5, and two elevators are expected to be installed by December at platforms 2-3 and 4-5, The Times of India reports. The escalators are complaint with international code, have 100-cm-wide steps, travel at a nominal speed of 0.5 mps and can carry 100 passengers per min. The Hindu notes the improvements will be a relief to passengers who no longer have to carry luggage across a steep foot overbridge or walk across busy tracks.
