VT TO EASE TRAFFIC FLOW AT NEW RAIL STATION IN INDIA
Approximately 800 workers are onsite building what will be one of the biggest metro rail stations in India — the Ameerpet interchange in northwestern Hyderabad, ahead of a targeted November opening, The Hindu reports. Spanning more than 200,000 sq. ft., the multilevel station will be fully equipped with lifts and escalators, with 16 lifts and 12 escalators on each side. The vertical-transportation (VT) equipment, along with staircases, will ease traffic flow for approximately 30,000 passengers who use the station each day. Expected to accommodate at least 6,000 passengers at any given time, the system includes instructional signage and announcements, and is part of a facility resembling a "modern airport."

ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTION AT LIRR STATION IN QUEENS
Construction of a glass-and-steel elevator at the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Flushing-Main Street Station in Queens, New York, has begun, marking progress on a US$24.6-million renovation project that began several years ago with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s purchase of property occupied by a grocery store, QNS reports. Part of a US$5.6-billion overhaul involving 39 LIRR stations, the Flushing-Main project also includes a new ticket office, platform shelters, lighting and signage, and is expected to continue for approximately another year.

ESCALATOR MISHAP INVOLVING CHILD INVESTIGATED IN SINGAPORE
An escalator at a mall in Pasir Ris, Singapore, was shut down following an August 4 incident in which a four-year-old girl’s shoe became trapped in a gap, The Straits Times reports. A passerby hit the emergency stop button, and responders freed the child, who was hospitalized and released. The Building Construction Authority found the gap between the steps where the shoe got stuck compliant with current code, but the unit remained out of service as an investigation continued.

VIBRANT PROJECT WITH 34-STORY TOWER FOR SAN DIEGO
Park & Market, a mixed-use development described by World Architecture News as vibrant, is coming to downtown San Diego. Designed by Carrier Johnson + CULTURE, it will bring together a 34-story apartment tower, a satellite campus for the University of California San Diego known as the Innovative Cultural and Education Hub, street-level retail and below-grade parking for 560 cars. Eighty-five of the residential units will be "affordable." Oregon's Holland Partner Group is the developer of the property, slated for completion by 2021, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune, on the block bounded by Park Boulevard, 11th Avenue and G Market streets.
