ISRAELI MINISTRY APPROVES PLAN FOR SUPERTALL
The Israeli Finance Ministry has approved plans for the 400-m-tall, 100-story “Tower Between Cities,” which, when completed, will be Israel’s tallest skyscraper, jns.org reports. In approving the plan by Miloslavsky architects, the ministry accepted a recommendation from Tel Aviv’s city engineer, Oded Gvuli, to allow the tower’s footprint to cover more than 166,500 m2 (546,000 sq. ft.). The tower will feature 24 elevators and include offices, public spaces and hotel rooms. It will be situated on the edge of Ramat Gan, Israel’s diamond district and business center. Completion is expected in 2023.

CTBUH ANNOUNCES TWO STUDENT COMPETITIONS
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has announced two student competitions: the 2017 Student Research Competition and International Student Tall Building Design Competition. For the Research Competition, students working under a professor should submit a research proposal that focuses on “tall building performance.” The winning proposal will receive a US$20,000 award to fund the research. The entry deadline is June 30. The Tall Building Design Competition asks entrants to propose a project in an actual site, anywhere in the world, that explores the “relationship of placing a tall building in a unique existing urban setting.” The top five winners will receive cash awards and stipends to attend the CTBUH 2017 annual conference this fall in Sydney. The registration deadline is July 17, and entries must be submitted by July 24.

ELEVATOR FREEFALL IN INDIA
The leader of West Bengal, India's ruling Trinamool Congress and former cabinet minister Madan Mitra was injured in an "elevator crash" in north Kolkata on the evening of March 28, India Blooms reported. The incident occurred at Kolkata Metro Railway's office in the Shyambazar neighborhood. As he descended from the building's fifth floor in an elevator, it started malfunctioning, and, "minutes later. . . went [into] a freefall and plummeted to the ground floor." Emergency crews extracted Mitra nearly an hour later, when he was taken to a nearby hospital nearby in stable condition. A preliminary inquiry by police found that the elevator's cables suddenly detached due to a "technical error," which is suspected to have led to the freefall.
