LONDON SEES RECORD RATE OF PLANNED HIGH RISES
The Financial Times reports a record 455 new tall buildings are planned or under construction in London. In 2016 alone, work began on nearly one tower per week, despite economic uncertainty over the Brexit vote to leave the European Union. Many of the new towers are planned outside the existing high-rise clusters, especially along the banks of the Thames and the eastern boroughs of Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. Not everyone is happy about the situation, however, and outspoken critics have forced at least one developer to abandon plans for a 72-story tower in favor of a 14-floor office building.

Elevators in five Jamaican hospitals will be modernized at a cost of JMD 66 million (US$515,000), jamaicaobserver.com reports. The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) announced the plan on March 31, and said the project would commence in the first quarter of the new fiscal year. Elevators will be replaced or refurbished at the National Chest, Princess Margaret, Spanish Town, Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee hospitals. SERHA said steps would be taken to mitigate inconveniences caused by the work. The work is actually Phase Two of a modernization project. Phase One, which took place in 2014-2015, involved modernizing three elevators at Kingston Public Hospital.
SHANGHAI MAINTENANCE COMPANIES PUT ON NOTICE
The Shanghai Quality Inspection and Supervision Bureau has ordered 17 elevator maintenance companies in the city to rectify irregularities in quality management and staff qualification. Shanghai Daily reported the companies had the worst evaluation results among the 270 elevator maintenance companies the watchdog checked. They were asked to rectify the situation and will face such punishments as fines or license revocation if they fail to do so. The city had more than 222,103 elevators in use by the end of last year, up 7.7% from a year earlier.
