ELEVATORS, ESCALATORS PART OF VANCOUVER SKYTRAIN WORK
Major upgrades to seven SkyTrain rapid-transit stations in the Vancouver metropolitan area will feature nine new elevators and 20 escalators, including a new elevator and three new escalators at the Surrey Central station, The Indo-Canadian Voice reports. Work is set to begin in early April and be finished by the end of 2018. Funded by the federal and provincial governments, along with TransLink, the multimillion-dollar effort is aimed at improving capacity, accessibility and safety as demand for transit grows.
LARGE WATERFRONT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT IN SOUTH BRONX
Chetrit Group and Somerset Partners were set to break ground earlier this year on what they hope will be two residential towers at 2401 Third and 101 Lincoln avenues on the waterfront in Mott Haven, South Bronx, New York, New York YIMBY reports. Although technically two buildings, since each group of structures shares a base, there are seven towers ranging from 16 to 25 stories envisioned. In March, developers had secured enough financing to build at least part of the development, which includes amenities, a public waterfront esplanade and parking. Hill West is the architect, and the target completion date is 2019.
SIMILAR ESCALATOR MISHAPS IN SAME WEEK IN MALAYSIA
Similar shopping-mall escalator accidents occurred within one week and approximately 5 mi. of each other in Malaysia, with the most recent incident taking place on March 8 in Subang Jaya, various news agencies, including New Straits Times, report. While the previous incident involved a calf injury, the latest one involved a woman injuring toes because of her foot becoming stuck in an escalator. She was treated at a hospital, and mall plans to implement a recorded message reminding riders to pay attention.
