IN MEMORIAM: JAMES E. BENNER
James E. "Jim" Benner, past president of Alps Wire Rope Corp., passed away on November 8 at age 77. He lived in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, with his wife, Judith. Benner was president of Alps from 1985 until his retirement in 2006. During this time, he grew the company from a small Midwestern distributor to a nationwide supplier. A native of Chicago Heights, Illinois, Benner had a distinguished career that included stints at Marmon Group, Teledyne and Alps. Survivors include sons Brad, Craig, Todd and Ross; and daughter, Allyson. A funeral is planned today in Dundee, Illinois. Memorial donations may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

GLASSY, STRIATED HIGH RISE FOR DOWNTOWN L.A.
Developer Mitsui Fudosan America and architect Johnson Fain hope to start construction in March 2018 on a 42-story tower in downtown Los Angeles' Financial District that would house approximately 430 residences and 10,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, The Architects Newspaper reports. Called Fig & Eighth Tower, the glassy, striated structure would join new developments including the city's new tallest building, the Wilshire Grand Center, and a new Whole Foods Market. An eight-level, 479-stall parking garage, which includes four below-ground levels, is also planned. The team hopes to have the building open for occupancy in 2020.

ELEVATORS PART OF UPGRADE AT ARMY TOWER IN ALABAMA
A pair of elevators — one for passengers and equipment and the other described as a “movable laboratory able to conduct tests from 0 to 300 ft.” — are part of the refurbishment of the 329-ft.-tall Russell Tower in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, used by the U.S. Army to observe test systems against physical targets, the Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) reports. The tower is one of two U.S. military instrumentation towers of 300 ft. or higher, with the other at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Getting the elevators up and running in Russell Tower is a top priority, according to AMRDEC. Funding has been secured, and work is expected to start soon.
