ICONIC LONDON STORE COMPLETES ESCALATOR UPGRADE
Harrods department store in London has completed a US$24.9-million renovation that included installation of 16 double escalators to carry shoppers between the ground and fifth floors of the historic building, the Evening Standard reports. Ian Thomas of Make Architects oversaw the project, which involved restoring the 1930s heritage of the escalator hall by incorporating original materials, such as nickel bronze, and introducing modern technology. The store remained open throughout the project with minimal interruption to customers, which Harrods Managing Director Michael Ward credited to cooperation between Make and store employees.
“UPPER WEST SIDE” NOW COMPLETE IN MELBOURNE
With delivery of Tower Three of Far East Consortium's Upper West Side residential development at 33 Rose Lane in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia, the project is now complete, The Urban Developer reports. Designed by Cottee Parker, Tower Three stands 52 stories and contains approximately 640 apartments. In all, Upper West Side has housing for approximately 4,000, a large retail component and amenities such as a rock-climbing wall, pool and gymnasium.
ESCALATOR FALL FATAL FOR BABY IN SHANGHAI
A baby fell from his grandmother’s arms 30 ft. over the side of an escalator in a Shanghai mall on November 11, passing away at a local hospital a short time later, the Mirror reports. A video shows the woman stumbling into a gap as she steps onto the escalator, which was going down, then trying to hold onto the child until he slips from her grasp and falls.
