MILESTONE FOR MAYR’S NEW COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
Mayr GmbH + Co. KG, which supplies brakes, clutch and power-transmission systems to the elevator and other industries, held a roofing ceremony on December 15 at its new communications center in Mauerstetten, Germany. Scheduled to be ready for move-in by summer 2017, the mayr.com building will serve as a communications hub for customers, partners, trainees and employees. It will have office, reception and conference areas. Designed by Hirner and Riehl of Munich, Germany, the "architecturally challenging" building has a 50-m. long tunnel connecting it to the existing Mayr facility. Construction was handled by Kreuzer and Xaver Schmid.
NEW LIFE FOR GEHRY-DESIGNED L.A. PROJECT
A long-delayed Gehry Partners-designed project that includes 38- and 16-story towers in downtown Los Angeles has gotten new life, with the L.A. City Council approving a new joint-venture partnership and announcing a timeline, Architect's Newspaper reports. If all goes as planned, Grand Avenue, across from Disney Concert Hall, will break ground in 2018 and open in 2022. Jointly developed by Related Cos. and CCCG Overseas of China, the plan includes up to 450 residences in the taller building and a 300-room hotel in the other, both atop a mixed-use podium. Also planned are 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, 1,500 parking spaces and a large public plaza along Grand Avenue.
ESCALATOR MALFUNCTION RESULTS IN INJURIES IN BROOKLYN
Seven people were hospitalized as a result of an escalator malfunction in a mall in Brooklyn, New York, on December 20, ABC Channel 7 News reports. An eyewitness said people were walking on the escalator that was not moving, when it suddenly started moving, causing a chain reaction. Two of the injured were in serious condition, and the unit was closed following the incident.
