ESCALATORS IN LONDON TUBE’S NEW CROSSRAIL STATION FEATURED
London’s Tottenham Court Road station, the last of the new stations being built for Transport for London’s new Crossrail/Elizabeth line, opened on July 8, and blog IanVisits provided an in-depth look at its features, which include one of the longest escalators in the London Underground. Escalators in the station also have strip lighting just above their safety brushes and uplighting in their midsections. Advertising panels along the sides will now be a “single ribbon running from top to bottom for super-long adverts.” Spanning more than 60 mi. from Reading and Heathrow in the west through central tunnels across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, the line is scheduled to open in December.
CHICAGO’S STUDIO GANG DESIGNS ITS FIRST CANADIAN PROJECT
Alex Bozikovic, a writer for The Globe and Mail, says a proposed Toronto project designed by Chicago's Studio Gang — its first in Canada — follows the right recipe: tall, innovative and excellent. Featuring a 48-story residential tower on Delisle Avenue spiraling into the sky as a 16-sided prism that gets slimmer as it rises, the plan by developer Slate Asset Management includes considerable infrastructure improvements and preservation of a 1929 Art Deco façade in the Yonge and St. Clair neighborhood. The façade would be incorporated into the base of an adjacent 1960s tower with a Studio Gang addition. Sidewalks would be widened, and a park would be expanded.
DEWHURST MIDDLE EAST’S NEW WEB PORTAL SPOTLIGHTS FINISHES
In support of its main, technical website, Dewhurst Middle East Elevator Accessories LLC has launched a new web portal for architects, consultants, interior designers and building owners that spotlights the company’s elevator finishes and technology. Dewhurst Middle East states the website’s “clean and concise layout illustrates the continuing evolution of elevator finishes and technology as brands strive for uniqueness in a competitive market.”
REZONING IN SYDNEY PAVES WAY FOR SUPERSIZING OF PROJECT
In light of a piece of property at 601 Pacific Highway in Crows Nest north of Sydney’s central business district being rezoned to encourage intensified development, Stockland plans to build two, primarily residential towers standing 63 and 45 stories, urban.com/au reports. The design by Architectus could bring more than 500 apartments, 255 underground parking spots, offices and retail to the area adjacent to St. Leonards. Architectus says 601 Pacific Highway will be “a place where people shop, live, work and gather to enjoy the public domain.” A timeframe for the project was not provided.
REREGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR EESFC TORONTO CRIUSE
Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation of Canada (EESFC) Chairman Gord Pattison explained that due to difficulties with corporate registries, Canada and EESFC’s license as a charity forced it to refile as such, making it unable to host the 2018 EESFC Cruise, scheduled for August 16 at Toronto Harbor. However, the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) will be hosting the cruise on behalf of EESFC. Collections for the cruise will be done through and held by CECA until the matter is resolved. Registrants, both new and old, are asked to (re)register through the CECA website and pay online. Pattison added that EESFC will be announcing new initiatives to get programs back up and running through a part-time Canadian administrator, though the process may take six months. He and the Canadian board of EESFC thanks CECA, its board of directors and its Executive Director Catharine Bothwell.
