TARRIFS ON CHINESE VT EQUIPMENT SET TO COMMENCE
National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII®) notes in its Insider newsletter that tariffs on imported Chinese vertical-transportation (VT) equipment will take effect on July 6. On June 15, President Donald Trump, along with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), released the administration's final list of Chinese products subject to tariffs. Included are elevator and escalator parts and components, including sheaves, motors and machines. NEII submitted testimony in May voicing concerns and recommending that several elevator- and escalator-related subsections be excluded from the list, stating that the tariffs would harm supply chains, decrease competitiveness in the industry and force additional costs onto U.S. customers. The USTR plans to let companies apply for individual-product exemptions, and NEII said its government-affairs team would work with companies that wish to engage in the process.

ESCALATORS TO BE INSTALLED ON ISTANBUL'S STEEP SLOPES
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, in an effort to improve the lives of senior citizens and those with disabilities, has initiated a project to install escalators on the city’s steep slopes, the Hürriyet Daily News reports. A tender that will be conducted on July 23 covers escalators for three streets in the Beyoglu, Fatih and Eyüp districts, but the project is expected to cover other districts as well. Of the three slopes in the tender, one is 85 m long, and two others are 50 m long.
