ELA/EFESME INITIATIVE PROGRESSES
A cooperation initiative launched earlier this year between the European Lift Association (ELA) and the European Federation of Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EFESME) is progressing following several meetings, the organizations report. Aimed at representing the overall industry on codes and standards; safety, education and training; and accessibility, the partners, along with Notified Bodies for Lifts, stated they are addressing "the difficulty encountered by the industry as a whole for applying harmonized standards." They have proposed to the European Union Commission that verbiage stating lifts be delivered in accordance with contractual agreements be made part of the Guide of Application to the Lifts Directive update. Other interested parties are welcome to participate, and may contact EFESME at email and ELA at email.
CHANGES IN VANCOUVER BEACH DISTRICT “LIVING SCULPTURE”
Recent renderings reflect changes in the design of a carved tower described as a "living sculpture" taking shape in the Beach District of downtown Vancouver, Canada, SkyriseCities reports. The carved cutout is now more pronounced, with a remarkably slender lower level sitting atop an asymmetrical base that stands several stories. Previously reported as 40 stories, the structure is now 49 stories but will still contain residences (600), along with ground-level retail. Westbank is the developer, and the lead architect is Bjarke Ingels Group. Completion is anticipated in 2018.
24-STORY SENIOR COMPLEX FOR NYC’S UPPER EAST SIDE
Omega Healthcare and Maplewood Senior Living are developing a 235-ft.-tall, 24-story senior living facility on the corner of 93rd Street and Second Avenue on the Upper East Side of New York City (NYC), New York YIMBY reports. It will contain 215 apartments, along with full amenities like a dining room, kitchen, café, library and beauty salon. Taking shape near the new 96th Street subway station, the building will be built around a four-story ventilation facility required by the station. Developers plan to break ground after that facility is complete.
