52-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWER, A SCHOOL AND MORE IN JERSEY CITY
A plan to build a 52-story residential tower, 16,485 sq. ft. of retail and a public school at 25 Columbus Drive in Jersey City, New Jersey, has been approved by the Jersey City Planning Board, Jersey Digs reports. L+M Development Partners is behind the project, designed by New York-based Handel Architects. The tower will include 750 units, and be complemented by a 35,000-sq.-ft public school, lower-level buildings housing stores, approximately 400 parking spaces and a public plaza. L+M has also agreed to renovate an existing public housing complex nearby.
29-, 49-STORY TOWERS FORM L.A. CITY CENTER
New renderings have been revealed of L.A. City Center, the latest megaproject in downtown Los Angeles, The Architect's Newspaper reports. Developed by Shenzhen Hazens Real Estate Group, the plan features a 29-story tower designed by Gensler containing a W hotel and a 49-story tower designed by Steinberg Architects containing approximately 430 condominiums. A podium with hotel amenities, underground parking and 5,000 sq. ft. of retail along Figueroa Street are also on the drawing boards. Recently approved by the L.A. City Planning Commission, the project will be built in phases, with the hotel going up first.
EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR 2018 DEADLINE EXTENDED
The deadline for submissions for the ELEVATOR WORLD Project of the Year Awards 2018 has been extended to October 20. The contest recognizes excellence in vertical, horizontal and inclined transportation. Winners in each of nine categories, “Elevators, New Construction”; “Elevators, Modernization”; “Escalators, New Construction”; “Escalators, Modernization”; “Moving Walks”; “Inclined Elevators”; “Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts”; “Private-Residence Elevators”; and “Special-Purpose Lifts,” will receive an award and be recognized in a feature story in the January 2018 issue. The contest is open for projects that have been completed within the past two years, and both text and photos must be submitted, along with a completed entry form, via electronic file sharing, or a mailed disc and/or flash drive. CHILD’S FINGERS SEVERED IN SALT LAKE CITY ESCALATOR MISHAP
A three-year-old girl had two fingers partially severed in an escalator accident in a Salt Lake City supermarket on September 20, Fox 13 News reports. The child was transported to a hospital within minutes of medical personnel arriving, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. A fire department spokesperson said the incident serves as an important reminder to be vigilant and pay close attention to warning signs, especially when small children are involved.
