NIDEC CEO VISITS CANTON ELEVATOR
Shigenobu Nagamori, CEO of Nidec Corp., visited Canton Elevator Inc.'s headquarters in North Canton, Ohio, on November 15, 2017. Nidec acquired hydraulic elevator manufacturer Canton in 2016, bringing its portfolio to 318 companies with 120,000 employees around the world. Nagamori said he expects Canton's growth to be driven by its decades of experience and customer trust in its brands, combined with Nidec's strength in nonproprietary components, financial stability and global presence. According to Canton, "From the welders to the management team, all were impressed with Nagamori, Nidec and where Canton Elevator is going in the future."
 
DUBAI’S NEWEST LANDMARK, HADID-DESIGNED OPUS, SET TO OPEN
The Opus, the only building designed by late architect Zaha Hadid in Dubai, is set to open on January 15, various news outlets, including ConstructionWeekOnline, report. With 21 above-ground floors, the structure is clad in blue glass and consists of two towers linked by a four-story, ground-level podium, resembling a giant cube with a large void at its center. Developed by Omniyat Properties in Business Bay and under construction since 2008, The Opus has 56,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, 92 hotel rooms, 60 apartments, a club and 12 restaurants, according to The National.
 
39-STORY APARTMENT TOWER BREAKS GROUND IN HOUSTON
Holliday Fenoglio Flower LP, a brokerage firm representing Houston developer Hanover Co., announced ground has been broken on Hanover River Oaks, a 39-story apartment tower in the Upper Kirby commercial district in Houston that has been in the works since 2014, the Houston Business Journal reports. Located on 1.6 acres at 2930 Kirby Drive, the structure was designed by Chicago-based Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) and will have 370 residences, 10,000 sq. ft. of ground-level retail and amenities such as a rooftop pool, controlled-access parking and a private theater. The first units are expected to come online in early 2020.

FOB WITH ESCALATORS APPLAUDED IN GROWING INDIAN CITY
Construction of escalators at a new foot overbridge (FOB) at Signature Tower, a key intersection in the growing Indian city of Gurugram, drew a positive response from observers, who said such measures can help prevent pedestrian traffic fatalities, the Hindustan Times reports. Gurugram police report that of the 257 traffic deaths that occurred from January 1-August 1 2017, 187 were pedestrians. The National Highways Authority of India is building underpasses and flyovers with FOBs at three Gurugram intersections, Rajiv Chowk, Iffco Chowk and Signature Tower, the latter of which is slated for completion by April.
