OTIS WINS 171 UNITS FOR FRENCH RAILWAY
Otis France has been awarded a contract by SNCF French Rail to install 171 escalators and moving walks for northern France. Seventy-five Otis escalators will support the future Project Eole (East-West Express) stations: Porte Maillot, CNIT-La Défense and Nanterre La Folie. The units will be deployed over seven years. The contract also includes 94 escalators and two moving walks, covering renewal of equipment and maintenance in the existing Magenta and Haussmann Saint-Lazare stations. These units are to be installed over 10 years. The escalators will be from Otis’ heaviest line (520 NPE) and include steps fitted with sensors and cameras that analyze and record the state of each component to anticipate breakdowns and limit downtimes (Dr. Step™). The contract includes maintenance for 15 years and “mid-life” renovations for all units.

DEVELOPERS DECIDE TO GO TALLER IN BROOKLYN
Plans for 19-story office building at 540 Fulton Street in downtown Brooklyn, New York, have been scrapped in favor of a 43-story, 511-ft.-tall mixed-use tower, City Realty reports. The new plan would bring 327 apartments within 236,869 sq. ft., along with 96,592 sq. ft. of commercial and office space on the first eight floors. Resident amenities include storage, bicycle and package rooms; a business center; a gym; two lounges on a ninth-floor terrace; and a rooftop deck and lounge. The office floors will have access to two terraces and a bicycle room. Marvel Architects, designer of the original structure, is on board for the redesigned project.

MAN FALLS TO HIS DEATH "CLOWNING AROUND" ON ESCALATOR
Police in Providence, Rhode Island, blame a man's fatal fall off an escalator on his "clowning around," several outlets, including KETV7, report. Witnesses at the Providence Place Mall on May 28 told police that the 45-year-old man was riding on the escalator handrail when he lost his balance and fell one floor to the mall's food court. He reportedly hit his head on a table and suffered "massive injuries." This was not the first fatality blamed on improper escalator use at the mall. In 2006, a man trying to jump between two escalators fell to his death.
