HEATHERWICK SCULPTURE WITH ADA ELEVATOR TO OPEN IN NYC
Thomas Heatherwick’s 150-ft.-tall public sculpture, previously known as the Vessel, is set to open in March with an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant elevator, New York YIMBY reports. Fabricated in Italy and shipped across the Atlantic in 75 pieces, the sculpture sits in the center of a 5-acre landscaped area in the Hudson Yards megadevelopment in New York City. The assemblage has approximately 2,500 individual steps and 154 flights of stairs. The elevator is on the back of the southern edge housed in an exposed shaft painted black to blend with the structure’s dark-colored interior. Four flights of stairs wrap around the elevator shaft. Hudson Yards developer Related Cos. says the Vessel is still awaiting its permanent name.
