Lerch Bates Inc. has been selected to design the vertical-transportation system for San Francisco International Airport's (SFO) Terminal 1 (T1), which was built in the early 1960s. The modernized T1 is expected to open in 2024, and the terminal will remain open throughout the project. The US$2.4-billion project includes 24 new machine-room-less elevators, 22 new escalators, four new moving walks and the modernization of two Westmont Speedwalks. The remodeled T1 is aiming for the highest Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design rating possible.

REALM ADELAIDE TO BE AUSTRALIAN CITY’S TALLEST BUILDING
Realm Adelaide, a jagged geometric building designed by Elenberg Fraser that will stand 132 m and 40 stories, is set to become the tallest building in Adelaide, Australia, The Urban Developer reports. Final plans, which include more than 300 apartments of various sizes and two floors of amenities, are pending approval. Part of the plan is to preserve and revitalize Assay House, built in 1858 and housing a mint where prospectors' gold was turned into coins. The developer is a Sydney family with ties to Adelaide.

BUILDINGS UP TO 32 STORIES SET TO RISE IN LONDON
Four new buildings designed by Arup that range in height from eight to 32 stories are poised to rise in the Broadgate area of London, following local officials' approval of revised plans, Architects’ Journal reports. The structures will house 61,867 m2 of office space, as well as events facilities and retail. Called 2-3 Finsbury Avenue Square, the development is backed by British Land. It is expected to start taking shape sometime after UBS vacates space in a pair of 1980s Peter Foggo-designed buildings, which will be demolished.
