CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSING AT DUBAI SUPERTALL SITE
Pilings and the foundation for one of two supertall mixed-use towers making up Uptown Dubai by Dubai Multi Commodities Center (DMCC) have been laid and construction is progressing apace, ConstructionWeekOnline.Com reports. Consisting of 459- and 340-m-tall towers, the development is next to Jumeirah Lake Towers. The 340-m-tall tower, under construction now, will include hotel rooms in partnership with Accor Hotels, restaurants, offices and 237 residences. Completion is anticipated in 2021. With pilings and concrete in place for both the tower and two-level central plaza, DMCC Chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem stated the company is "laser focused on delivering Uptown Dubai. . . on time and within budget."
LUXURY TOWER OPENS IN MIAMI'S BRICKELL NEIGHBORHOOD
Solitair, a 50-story, 438-unit luxury apartment tower in Miami's Brickell neighborhood, is open and ready for move-in, Curbed Miami reports. The tower, developed by ZOM Living and designed by international architectural firm Stantec, features an angular, basket-weave façade inspired by the trunk of a Medjool date palm tree. Amenities include 6,200 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail space and a parking garage with 463 spaces. It also has one of the highest resort-style swimming pools in Miami, on the 50th-floor deck. Other resident amenities include a billiards room, lounge, business center and fitness complex with an outdoor yoga area.
GROUNDBREAKING PLANNED FOR FORT MYERS CONDOMINIUM
A developer plans to break ground by year's end on a two-building, 22-story condominium project in Fort Myers, Florida, The Real Deal reports. Prima Luce, a 220-unit development in the city's downtown, will offer views of the Caloosahatchee River, and will provide residents with a heated swimming pool, a yoga studio, a fitness center, a social room and virtual concierge services. The US$120-million project is being led by MacFarlane Barney Development, which said that about 50 of the units are already under contract.
ESCALATOR COLLAPSE FATAL IN OMAN
An escalator collapsed at an under-construction mall in Muscat, Oman, killing an expatriate worker and injuring three other people, the Times of Oman reports. The Royal Oman Police said the incident happened in the Mabella area, the worker who died was Asian, and the three others suffered “varying levels of injury.” This follows an incident in July in which a Omani and an expatriate were inured when an elevator fell at an office building in Ibri.
LIFT & ESCALATOR SYMPOSIUM, RELATED EVENTS
The Lift & Escalator Symposium Educational Trust has announced there will be a free University of Northampton public lecture on “The Space Elevator Concept and Dynamics” on September 18 at 5:30 pm. Preceding the 9th Symposium on Lift & Escalator Technologies on September 19-20, it will feature symposium keynote speaker Dr. Bryan Laubscher of the International Space Elevator Consortium.
