MALAYSIAN STATE ADDRESSING LIFT, ESCALATOR SAFETY
The state of Kedah in northwestern Malaysia is addressing lift and escalator safety in light of recent accidents, various news outlets, including the New Straits Times and Sun Daily report. Efforts include formation of a committee to help educate the public and operators about safe use and operation. Failure on the part of operators to install anti-climbing devices and barricades are common, according to the government. The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) issued 123 directives and 23 notices to mall operators in February-June 2016. DOSH said units will be checked every 15 months and that operating permits will not be issued until units are deemed in good working order. There are 815 lifts and 35 escalators operating in Kedah.
