REPLACEMENT OF INDIAN BUILDING’S ELEVATORS URGED
The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has informed public officials that the four elevators serving the government office building Junta House in Panaji, India, need to be replaced in light of obsolete equipment and frequent breakdowns, The Times of India reports. The commission gave Goa officials a four-month timeframe for work to be completed. Two of the lifts are older than 20 years, and maintenance company thyssenkrupp said it is unable to maintain them due to spare parts being unavailable. A contract has been awarded to replace one of the lifts, and that is scheduled to be completed by June 2017.
PAKISTAN ELEVATOR MISHAP FATAL FOR 12-YEAR-OLD
A 12-year-old boy died in Karachi, Pakistan, on December 24 as a result of falling down an elevator shaft in the building where he lived with his family, ARY News reports. Police are investigating the incident, which is said to have happened when an elevator door opened to an empty shaft. Housing approximately 140 apartments and hundreds of shops, the building is served by four elevators, which residents said are poorly maintained and often out of service.
MOTHER, DAUGHTER RESCUED FROM MIAMI MALL ELEVATOR
A 29-year-old mother and her 9-year-old daughter were rescued by first responders using the Jaws of Life from a panoramic elevator in a North Miami mall that dropped from the third to second floors on December 23, Channel 7 News reports. Shoppers said they heard a “big boom” when the incident occurred. The mother was hospitalized with undetermined injuries. Mall officials said the unit was regularly serviced and had just been serviced in the past week. The incident remains under investigation.
