NEW STANDARDS FOR SAUDI ELEVATORS STARTING IN MARCH
The Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) will require that most elevators be registered with and certified by the Civil Defense starting in March, the Saudi Gazette reports. The measure will require certificates to be displayed at the ground-floor entrances of all residential and commercial buildings. During a workshop at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry on January 10, SASO and Civil Defense officials noted that private villas, military buildings, mining and construction sites are excluded from inspections for now, but will be included at a later date. By 2020, all elevators must meet the standards, according to SASO. Civil Defense Capt. Faris Bader said the authority will oversee the work of companies authorized to evaluate elevators.

FRESH RENDERINGS OF HEATHERWICK BUILDINGS IN NYC
New renderings show details of 22- and 10-story buildings that will flank the High Line in New York City’s (NYC) Chelsea neighborhood, New York YIMBY reports. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick with SLCE as the architect of record, the structures will total approximately 571,000 sq. ft. for residences and will have outdoor greenspace on their rooftops. Taking the place of low-rise parking garages, both will have podlike, brick-and-glass profiles and boast proximity to the Hudson River, the High Line and public transit.
