18 PEOPLE HURT WHEN MALL ESCALATOR REVERSES
Authorities in Hong Kong said 18 people were injured when an escalator at a shopping mall suddenly reversed direction, ejinsight.com reported. Video appears to show the upward-traveling escalator suddenly reversing at a higher speed, sending riders tumbling. Authorities said one man was in serious condition with a head injury after the incident. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the malfunction, but two mechanics accused of tampering with the escalator after the accident were arrested on charges of obstruction of justice, according to KTLA5.
ONTARIO BILL FOCUSES ON FIXING ELEVATORS
Han Dong, a Toronto Member of Provincial Parliament, has introduced the “Reliable Elevators Act,” a bill that would force elevators to be fixed within a week in long-term care facilities and retirement homes, and two weeks in other residences, thestar.com reports. Scofflaws would face fines of up to CAD50,000 (US$37,360) for an individual and up to CAD250,000 (US$186,800) for a corporation under the Consumer Protection Act. Additionally, all developers planning buildings with more than seven floors would be required to conduct elevator-traffic analyses to obtain a building permit. Neither Ontario nor Toronto have laws in place to make sure elevators are repaired quickly.
