OREGON IS FIRST STATE TO ALLOW TALL-TIMBER CONSTRUCTION
Oregon has become the first U.S. state to allow construction of timber buildings taller than six stories, setting a precedent for the rest of the country, ArchDaily reports. The state building code addendum includes three new classifications: for timber buildings up to 18 stories or 270 ft., 12 stories or 180 ft., and nine stories or 85 ft. The addendum is part of a statewide program that allows alternate building techniques after technical details have been approved by an advisory council. An ad hoc committee of the International Code Council presented its findings to the Oregon Codes Division in April, and the state adopted all 14 of its recommendations, including standards and best practices for the load-bearing potential, fireproofing and seismic rating of timber materials.
HYUNDAI WINS BIG CONTRACTS IN CHINA, SOUTH KOREA
In one of several announcements in the summer Hyundai Elevator Newsletter, the company said it won a contract for 65 elevators and escalators to be installed in the Harbin Metro Line 1 extension in Harbin, China. The KRW7.4-billion (US$6.5-million) project broke ground in June with the installation of 10 elevators and 55 escalators at five subway stations. In South Korea, it won a bid for 31 elevators at 53-story multipurpose The Sharp Gravista in the planned city of Ilsan in South Korea's Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The contract, worth KRW6 billion (US$5.3 million), is to install high-speed elevators reaching speeds up to 4 mps (20 units) and 3.5 mps (10 units). Hyundai plans to break ground in September and complete installation early next year. POSCO Engineering & Construction is in charge of construction of the building, situated next to Ilsan KINTEX Exhibition Center.

HOME ELEVATORS’ POPULARITY CONTINUES TO GROW IN INDIA
Home elevators continue to become more popular in India, with residents going for utility, style or a blend of both, The Hindu reports. KONE India Managing Director Amit Gossain observes there has been an increase in elevators being added to existing buildings, and notes that, if a homeowner is planning to add one later, a hoistway should be included in the original plan. Mumbai-based Jet Elevator says people are developing health issues earlier in their lives, which has led to an increasing number of homeowners making provisions for elevators, even in homes that are only two stories. Customers are also looking for “smart” features such as touchscreens, as well as energy efficiency, which experts say can be provided by hydraulic units that only require power when ascending.
