GAL TO CELEBRATE OPENING OF MIAMI SERVICE CENTER
GAL Manufacturing will hold a celebration to mark the opening of its new Regional Service Center in Miami on June 21, 2018, the company announced. Bronx, New York-based GAL, an international provider of non-proprietary elevator components to the industry, opened the large, storefront facility on June 1, where it displays equipment and products from its family of companies: GAL, Hollister-Whitney, Courion, Bore-Max and GAL Canada. The center includes a fully stocked warehouse, a training and education area and onsite technical support professionals. The celebration, which will be held from 4-8 p.m., will be at the new center at 15825 NW 15th Avenue, Miami Gardens. FAKE PARTS TO BE DESTROYED DURING SKF EVENT
SKF Group, a global supplier of bearings, seals, mechatronics and related products and services, is planning a media event during which 30 T. of counterfeit bearings will be destroyed. The event, to take place on June 27 at company headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, is meant to raise awareness of efforts to combat the distribution of counterfeit parts. Taking part will be SKF brand-protection experts, the European Anti-fraud Office, Swedish Customs and police agencies. The fake parts to be destroyed were seized during raids in which SKF participated.
OREGON TOWER WOULD INCLUDE FIVE-STAR HOTEL
Developer BPM Real Estate Group has submitted plans for a mixed-use high rise including what is being promoted as Portland, Oregon's first five-star hotel, The Oregonian reports. The early plans call for a 33-story tower at 936 S.W. Washington Street in downtown, a site that's currently a parking lot. The tower would include a mix of offices, condominiums and retail. Plans call for 225 hotel rooms on nine floors; 184,000 sq. ft. of office space on six floors; and 128 condominiums on the top 14 floors. The plan includes event space and underground parking for 357 cars. The ground floor would have retail space, including a food hall.
IN MEMORIAM: BERNARD FRANCIS “BERNIE” KELLY
Bernard Francis “Bernie” Kelly, a founder of the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA), passed away on May 30, 2018, in Ottawa, Canada. Kelly, born in 1932 in Montreal, was an astute businessman and entrepreneur, having founded dozens of companies, focusing most of his work in the elevator business. Among his achievements was his role in the founding of CECA, which was incorporated on May 29, 1972. For three years, Kelly, together with Ron Battle and Roger Leclerc, laid the groundwork in forming CECA and making it active in Quebec. He was described by his children as “a proud Irishman and a devoted family man.” He gave a great deal of time to his community, particularly to youth programs on the West Island of Montreal, which was, his family said, “a great source of pride for him.” Kelly was predeceased by his wife, Sheila (nee Murphy), and is survived by his children, Kevin (Monique), Sharon (Steven) and Shawn (Shawna), as well as seven grandchildren: Madeleine, Jack, Charlotte, Maddie Anne, Aidan, Isabella and Brodie. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on June 12, 2018, at Canadian Martyrs Parish, 100 Main Street, Ottawa, Canada. Interment in Montreal will follow immediately after mass.
