OTIS CANADA AWARDED OTTAWA LRT CONTRACT
Otis Canada Inc. has been tapped by Ottawa Light Rail Transit (LRT) Constructors to provide 54 and modernize two elevators for the O-Train Confederation Line, Ottawa's largest infrastructure project since the Rideau Canal was built in 1832. The new line will provide LRT along a 12.5-m-long route with 13 stations, three of which are underground. The order includes 44 Gen2® and 10 freight elevators. Construction of the system began in 2013, and it is scheduled to come online in 2018. Otis Canada President Tony Grilli observed Otis is "uniquely capable of providing products sturdy enough to handle a transit system with a capacity of 24,000 passengers per hour in each direction."
TALLEST BUILDINGS IN U.K. OUTSIDE LONDON POISED TO RISE
Owen Street, consisting of four buildings ranging from 37 to 64 stories, is poised to rise in Manchester, U.K., skyscrapernews.com reports. Upon completion, the buildings will be the tallest in the U.K. outside London. Foundations for two of the towers, including the shortest, are now taking shape, with the entire project expected to be complete in 2021. Simpson Haugh is responsible for the final design of the development, which aims to bring nearly 1,500 new apartments to the market. The developer is Renaker Build.
ATLANTA PROJECT TO INCLUDE 32-STORY OFFICE TOWER
Atlanta-based Selig Development Corp. aims to start construction by the middle of 2017 on a mixed-use development that includes a 32-story office tower, Shopping Center Business reports. The US$400-million project is also set to include a building with a 150-room hotel on the lower floors with 80 residential units above. The location is 1105 West Peachtree Street in Midtown, across from a new medical center and Whole Foods and convenient to public transportation. Selig anticipates the 645,000 sq. ft. of office space to be nearly 50% leased when it opens in the fourth quarter of 2019.
