PRAISE HEAPED ON MULTITOWER FRANKFURT PLAN
Members of an eight-person jury who unanimously chose a UNStudio design for a four-tower, 748-ft.-tall development in the Banking District of Frankfurt, Germany, heaped praise on the project, describing it as transformative, ArchDaily reports. It promises to create thousands of jobs and ultimately, homes for approximately 1,000 residents. Construction is expected to start this year on the former site of Deutsche Bank, closed to the public for decades, with one of the buildings opening in 2021. Juror Jürgen Groß, managing partner of urban development firm Groß & Partner, said the development will enhance Frankfurt's allure as an "interesting and viable city on an international level."
AUTHORITIES: MALAYSIAN ESCALATOR MISUSED PRIOR TO MISHAP
Authorities found the escalator involved in a March 5 mishap at a shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, in which a 20-year-old woman suffered a gash to her leg, had been misused prior to the incident, Astro Awani reports. Mall management, the escalator manufacturer and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health said factors such as bringing baby strollers onto the escalator contributed to a piece of metal becoming loose, gashing the woman’s calf. The mall is installing poles to prevent strollers or wheelchairs from boarding the unit.
ASIAN INVESTMENT FUELS VIÑOLY’S LATEST MANHATTAN PROJECT
An approximately US$269-million construction loan from a consortium of Singaporean banks, along with a US$100-million investment from Beijing SHOKAI Group, is paving the way for the latest high-rise residential tower designed by Rafael Viñoly at 281 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York, SkyRise Cities reports. Following on the heels of Viñoly's supertall, superthin 432 Park Avenue, this one is taking shape at the corner of East 30th Street and Fifth Avenue, will stand 55 stories tall and will contain 120 residences with retail on the bottom. Developers are Victor Group and Lendlease Development Inc.
