KONE PROVIDING VT FOR MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IN QATAR
KONE has been selected to provide vertical transportation (VT) for the fourth and final phase of the Msheireb Downtown Doha mixed-use development in Qatar's old commercial center. Equipment includes 53 MonoSpace® 700, 14 MiniSpaceTM and three TranSysTM freight elevators, and two TravelMasterTM escalators. The order also includes KONE's destination-control and E-Link equipment-monitoring systems. Phase four consists of a public plaza, 11 buildings of up to 113 m in height and six parking basements covering a total gross floor area of 133,410 m2. Msheireb Properties is the developer, and HOK is the lead consultant, with Teyseer Contracting Co. WLL and Consolidated Contractors Group S.A.L. serving as phase-four contractors.
MULTI NOMINATED FOR ANOTHER AWARD
thyssenkrupp's MULTI has been nominated for yet another innovation award, this time as a finalist in the “Large Enterprises” category of the Der Deutsche Innovationspreis (The German Innovation Award). Established by the WirtschaftsWoche magazine, in cooperation with consulting firm Accenture, energy supplier EnBW and automobile manufacturer Daimler. An awards ceremony will take place on April 13 in Munich, Germany. MULTI has been honored via the Edison Awards, German Design Award and TIME.
SHORTLIST OF ARCHITECTS FOR SYDNEY LANDMARK BUILDING
The Urban Developer reports developers Mirvac and Coombes Property Group have announced a shortlist of six architecture firms or teams to design what could be the tallest residential tower in Sydney. They are FJMT, Bates Smart, an Architectus and Ingenhoven team, a Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Crone team, Foster + Partners, and Wilkinson Eyre. The developers have been approved for a 260-m-tall building with a retail podium, apartments, a hotel and two childcare centers on 4,208 m2 at 505 George Street, described by Mirvac Head of Residential Stuart Penklis as the "spine" of the global city of Sydney. The winner is to be announced by mid year.
STRIKING NYC CONDO TOWER IS ALMOST COMPLETE
A striking addition to New York City’s Lower East Side, One Manhattan Square at 252 South Street, is eyeing a 2019 completion with only 12 floors of cladding to go before its exterior is finished, New York YIMBY reports. The 80-story, 850-ft.-tall residential building will be the neighborhood's "first legitimate" skyscraper, the source said. It will contain 815 condominiums and be one of the largest such projects in the city. Included in the Extell development will be an adjacent 13-story building that will house more than 200 “permanently affordable" rental apartments. Adamson Associates handled the design, which features sky-blue and black curtain walls with tilted glass panels that reflect the sky.
WOODS BAGOT’S URBAN OASIS IN THE “HAWAII OF CHINA”
Architecture firm Woods Bagot is celebrating the completion of Sunshine Insurance Finance Plaza, a 37-story mixed-use building in Sanya Bay, a resort area often described as the “Hawaii of China” on the southern tip of China’s Hainan Island, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports. Housing offices, a Hyatt hotel and — within four orb-shaped podiums — retail and public spaces, the new headquarters for the Chinese insurance provider has a curved shape that helps disperse heat from the strong western sun. At the base, it is heavily landscaped with indigenous flora and fountains to create an “urban oasis.”
