THYSSENKRUPP OPENS HIGH-SPEED TEST TOWER IN CHINA
thyssenkrupp said a 248-m-tall test tower, one of the tallest in the world, "stole the show" at an opening ceremony for its new plant in Zhongshan City, China, on March 23. With 31 stories above ground and 13 shafts, the tower will be used to test high-speed elevators and the ropeless MULTI system. The plant and tower represent a US$128-million investment and point to the company's continued investment in China, its largest Asian market. New concepts and pilot products, including an elevator reaching speeds of up to 18 mps, will be tested in the tower, which is approximately the same height as thyssenkrupp's 246-m-tall tower in Rottweil, Germany. The tower is outfitted with an active mass damper system that significantly reduces sway caused by changes in weather conditions, and mimics extreme conditions such as earthquakes and typhoons.
LAWMAKER CALLS FOR ELEVATOR REPAIR AT LIRR STATION
New York State Senator John E. Brooks took part in a rally by commuters on March 23 calling for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to fix the elevator and other handicap-access facilities at the Wantagh station, Patch.com reports. The rally came in response to repeated reports of a broken or stalling elevator causing people to miss trains or forcing them to go to other stations. The source said that on two separate occasions, emergency personnel had to rescue 11 people after they were trapped in the stalled elevator. "Once again, we are calling on the LIRR to meet the needs of all their customers, including commuters and travelers with disabilities and mobility issues," Brooks told the gathering.
MAN HURT AFTER CLOTHING BECOMES CAUGHT IN ESCALATOR
A man seriously injured his hand while riding an escalator on March 24 at a rail station in Malden, Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reports. Officials with the Malden Fire Department said the man was on an escalator at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Malden Center station about 8 p.m. when his clothing and then his arm became caught in the escalator. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. An MBTA spokesman said it was “unclear why he fell.”
PRAGUE METRO TO UPGRADE ESCALATORS AT STATION
As part of a push to save energy, the Prague Public Transport Co. is planning to upgrade escalators at the Palmovka Metro station, Prague.tv reports. City officials in the Czech Republic capital have approved a subsidy to modernize the escalators, making them safer, and more energy efficient and economical. Money was also approved to upgrade the main air ventilation systems in the Metro A, B and C lines. “We are striving to improve the environment in Prague," City Councilor Irena Ropková said on the city hall website.
