John Curzon of Southampton, U.K., has been named vice president of Marketing & Sales for the Bronx, New York-based GAL Manufacturing Corp. group of companies, it recently announced. Curzon, who has more than 25 years of experience in the vertical-transportation industry, has provided what GAL called “innovative market-driven engineering solutions” to it over five years, a factor that led to his new position. UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS CREATE VERTICAL-GROWTH ALGORITHM
Researchers at the Universidade da Coruna in Spain created an algorithm that predicts the vertical growth of cities, dezeen reports. Using an urban area’s historic and economic data, the algorithm estimates the number and location of high-rise buildings to be constructed. Team leader Ivan Pazos explained the “evolutionary computation” blends Darwin’s natural-selection logic and basic rules of genetics. Used in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the computation involves “a multitude of possible to solutions to a problem that are randomly combined” to determine an end result. The team used a district in Tokyo as a test case and found projections to be roughly 80% correct.
RAIL STATIONS ACROSS NORTHEAST INDIA GETTING VT EQUIPMENT
More than 60 lifts and escalators have been or will be installed at stations across India’s Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone, which covers northeast India and parts of West Bengal and Bihar, Northeast Now reports. Focusing on stations with the greatest numbers of passengers, the vertical-transportation (VT) upgrades include, in phase one, seven lifts to be installed by September; in phase two, 12 lifts to be installed by October; and 24 additional lifts at other key stations later during the fiscal year. Each lift will operate around the clock and have a capacity of 11 passengers. By December, NFR plans to install two escalators each at an additional nine stations.
DOSH HOSTS VT SAFETY CAMPAIGN AT MALAYSIAN MALL
Malaysia’s Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) hosted a vertical-transportation (VT) safety-awareness campaign at AEON Mall in Kuching, Malaysia, on July 21, the Borneo Post reports. Emphasizing the importance of hiring competent, DOSH-recognized firms to perform maintenance on elevators and escalators, the event was run in collaboration with mall management and MS Elevator Engineering Sdn Bhd. A DOSH official also urged caution on the part of passengers and urged attendees to always monitor children.
