JAPAN CONSIDERS EARTHQUAKE COUNTERMEASURES
The Yomiuri Shimbun recently reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency has adopted a plan to alert pertinent regions via a new emergency earthquake warning. The envisaged alert will be announced if long-period seismic vibrations occurring during a massive temblor are predicted to reach levels 3 or 4 of a four-level system. Additionally, the agency intends to use weather-information providers to inform building-management administrators about minor tremors that fall short of an emergency alert. Finally, new buildings at least 60 m tall must be designed “in a manner that precisely estimates the extent of long-period seismic vibrations that could be generated,” and a system by which to support quake-resistance assessments and reinforcement work on existing buildings will be initiated.
WMATA TESTING AUDIO ESCALATOR-SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is testing audio escalator announcements in an effort to increase passenger attention and decrease slip-and-fall accidents, WAMU at American University in Washington, D.C., reports. Reminders to watch one’s step, keep moving upon exiting and hold the handrail are being issued in male and female voices, starting at the 7th and F streets entrance at the Gallery Street-Chinatown station for six weeks. The program will then be tested at a handful of other stations. WMATA reports escalator slip-and-fall accidents increased 13% in 2016 and that most occurred as a result of passengers using inoperative escalators as stairs.
NEW GLOBAL FORECAST
Research and Markets recently announced the addition of the “Elevators and Escalators Market by Type, Service, Elevator Technology & End-Use Sector – Global Forecast to 2021” report to its offering. Noting such market drivers as rapid urbanization, improvements in construction and changing demographic trends, it states the elevator and escalator market will grow from US$88.78 billion in 2015 to US$125.22 billion by 2021, at a compound annual growth rate of 6.01%. Machine room-less technology is projected to be the fastest-growing segment in the next five years. Again, the Asia-Pacific market is projected to be the fastest-growing market and have the largest market share.
