TEI SECURES JOBS IN MIDTOWN, LIC IN NYC
TEI Group recently secured jobs in Midtown Manhattan and Long Island City (LIC) in New York City (NYC). In Midtown, TEI is modernizing 28 elevators at 1166 Avenue of the Americas, a 1.6-million-sq.-ft., 44-story class-A office tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1974. The property is owned by Minskoff Equities and March & McLennan Cos. CBRE represented the owners, and Citywide Elevator Consulting provided technical specifications. TEI President Mark Gregorio noted the "outstanding preventative maintenance" provided by TEI field technician Jeff Crosby was instrumental in landing the job. TEI is also installing two traction elevators at 43-12 Hunter Street, an 18-story residential building developed by Rockrose in LIC.
 
WOMAN DIES IN FALL DOWN BART ESCALATOR IN SAN FRANCISCO
A 51-year-old woman was pronounced dead by paramedics after falling down a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) escalator at the Montgomery Street station in San Francisco on February 1, The Mercury News reports. The incident happened at approximately 10 p.m. Detectives and technicians were notified, and the medical examiner’s office took possession of the body and performed an investigation. Transit officials say no foul play is suspected.
 
WORLD’S TALLEST STUDENT-ACCOMMODATION TOWER IN BRISBANE
Student One has built the tallest student-accommodation tower in the world in Brisbane, Australia, the 41-story, 122-m-tall Student One Wharf Street, which surpasses the previous tallest student-accommodation tower in Manchester, U.K., by 11 m, The Urban Developer reports. Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk launched the project from the structure's rooftop sky lounge a few days ago, and Student One expected to open Wharf Street "well in time" to welcome students for the 2018 school year. Containing approximately 750 beds, Student One Wharf Street was designed by architecture firm Arkhefield and constructed by Hutchinson Builders.
 
SMOKE SHUTS DOWN ESCALATORS AT SINGAPORE METRO STATION
Smoke from what was believed to be an escalator’s overheated bearings shut down a portion of a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore, on February 5, Channel News Asia reported. The incident occurred between 1:30 and 2 p.m., and all three escalators were stopped so safety checks could be performed. One MRT worker was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The area reopened at approximately 6 p.m., but the escalators remained shut down as safety checks continued.
