YUKON CLARIFIES ELEVATOR WORKER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
Following an incident in October in which an elevator worker was injured in a fall, the Department of Community Services in Canada’s Yukon Territory amended its competency requirements for those hired to install or maintain elevators and other fixed conveyances, the Whitehorse Daily Star reports. Among requirements that went into effect on November 5 are that workers provide proof of completing International Union of Elevator Constructors or National Association of Elevator Contractors Certified Elevator Technician (CET®) training, or be licensed in another part of Canada where such training is required. The work a person performs should “fall within the scope of [his or her] certifications or be directly supervised by a certified mechanic or technician.” The department believes clarifying the law will result in a safer work environment.
