Description

This composition is based on the beautiful works by the following two composers:

Steve Ashby aka @ashbysounds
"august 15, 2015 (disquiet0189-tonelayer)"

Olaf Wisselink aka @olafwie
"Cascade (disquiet0189-tonelayer)"

For this project, I selected the first second of Steve Ashby's composition and created a repeating loop with it. I selected 3 seconds from Olaf Wisselink's composition and created a second repeating loop. I played one loop on my desktop computer and one on my laptop. I fed the two loops into 4 VCAs with two panned hard left, and two panned hard right. I then used phase relationships created by Dr. Octature II with the 1 pole degrees driving Steve's loop at 45° on the left and 225° on the right, and the 2 pole degrees driving Olaf's loop at 90° on the left and 270° on the right. The left and right sides were run into a Modcan Dual Delay which was synced to the Doc Oc II's 4 pole degrees, 180° and 360° respectively for the left and right sides. For my contribution to this composition, I started with the frequency of the Doc Oc II as low as possible, and slowly moved through its range over the course of three minutes; from LFO into audiorate modulation. This caused interesting artifacts to arise. I felt like there were several sweet spots I could have let things run on longer, but was eager to experiment and work through in just a bit more than the suggested length.
