Listen

Description

I placed my matched stereo pair of DPA 4060 microphones on the top shelf within our refrigerator. One positioned towards the back which picked up more of the machinery rumble, and one positioned towards the front by the door. I then closed the door completely to hear what the fridge sounds like from the inside. Pretty chill with a breathy sort of pulse. I transferred the sound file from my field recorder to my computer and performed a bit of eq-ing to bring out the bass rumble a bit more. The opening 15 seconds is the fridge solo. I then imagined the fridge sound as a bass and rhythmic bed for the track and improvised the synth melody using my Push 2 controller for Ableton Live. It was the first time I used it in this way and I didn't use any quantization.

Incidentally, our fridge is a Whirlpool model, and my wife Lisa starts a new job with them tomorrow. Here's to her blissful transition.
