E pluribus unum -- out of many, one. Americans adopted this as an unofficial national motto from the earliest days of the republic, and even now, it adorns our coinage and some currency. We are proud of the unified nation we have shaped out of a multitude of states and peoples.
Yet, to listen to today's political rhetoric, Americans are more sharply divided than ever against each other. Political differences have become increasingly unbridgeable, with civil conversations only likely or possible with "fellow-believers."
What can Jewish wisdom teach us about how we approach the day's great political controversies? How can we again we confident that from our diverse and passionate political commitments, oneness can still emerge?
