The stigma surrounding DEIS schools is serving to undermine the confidence of students.
That’s the view of teachers, which is highlighted in a new survey.
The survey, by the Think-tank for Action on Social Change and commissioned by the TUI, asked 227 teachers and 49 school leaders about their attitudes towards the scheme.
While 62 per cent said the DEIS programme improved access to higher education, they mentioned various issues, including the stigma surrounding DEIS schools, infrastructure and resource problems.
To find out more, Alan Morrissey was joined by Principal Furglan NS, Patricia Vaughan and Agnes Hehir, St Joseph’s Community College Kilkee.
