Following up 2018’s incredible Zulu EP, this month Creatures returns to Lifestyle with two cuts of polished & weighty drum & bass, bringing some mates along for the ride too.
Harvey has been making noise out of Bristol for a while now and getting some serious recognition in the scene, and deservedly, as he’s been a busy boy; this release will mark his sixth so far this year, as well as running his own label and DJing all over the shop, it’s a wonder he ever gets any sleep! But we’re glad he does, cos it means he can come out with bangers like these. On this release he’s teamed up with fellow Bristol-boy Extraction for ‘Orbit’ and returning Lifestyle favourite Bluejay lays lyrics on ‘Concept’.
Concept is a stripped back roller; opening with airy pads high up in the atmosphere, it’s brought to ground by a tight-knit, shuffled break, that then drops into a weighty minimal piece of dance music. The bassline is a warping, single note modulation, which has tonnes of mid-range character. Bluejay spits an understated verse on top, before dropping out, being replaced by mid-range bass movements that riff expertly on top of the low end. A refined, moody minimal roller, this one’s got a mature sound, but packs a weighty punch that’ll keep the crowd bouncing.
Orbit is the more dancefloor-oriented of the two, again opening nice and tense, heavy sci-fi vibes with techy bleeps and big lush ambience. A big, knocking tech break kicks in to start the show, setting the mood as the heavily syncopated rhythms form the backbone of the track. When it drops it’s a pounding, subby affair. The bassline is a pulsing sub stab rhythm, that locks into the kick pattern and gives the track huge low-end power. As it progresses through, mid-range stabs and sweeps riff in and out of the space, reverberating on top of the break, and crisp high-end detail fizzes and builds towards the breakdown. The boys’ production really comes into it’s own with the perfectly crafted. deep ambient textures they create in the breakdown too, which is a wicked juxtaposition to the big, beefy main sections. Heavily danceable, and beautifully listenable, this one’s some of the best output we’ve heard from Harvey so far.
A very strong release from someone so fresh to the game, at just 22 Creatures is proving himself to be a real player and one of the best emerging talents from the UK scene at the minute. An absolutely essential release for anyone who likes their drum & bass with a dark, sci-fi tilt. Get it while it’s hot!
