A duo responsible for some of the biggest tracks on our label over the past couple of years, Volatile Cycle return to Lifestyle this month, showcasing their broad range of production skill with two slick cuts of modern drum & bass.
A pair we’ve been championing for a while now, VC have been consistently delivering interesting and forward-looking dance music for the label, since we first had them on-board in 2017. A duo that have become synonymous for wicked collabs, thanks largely to their ‘Volatile Cycle and Friends’ series here at Lifestyle, which has seen them cranking out bangers with some of the scenes most exciting and emergent producers.
For this release they’ve put together two very distinct tracks of dark drum & bass, drawing on a range of sounds and influences to great effect. The result is a versatile and slick release, which will hit the target for any DJ aiming to murk the dancefloor.
Arpoon is an acidy roller, an atmospheric cut with heavy sci-fi vibes. Built around a stabbing mid-range that pops and flutters its way through the tune, while rich, warm low end rolls out the monotonic bassline, all pushed ever-forward by a big, lively break.
Own You has VC teaming up once more with Bristol’s Primitive Instinct (a collab that last gave us the techy banger Gully Tuckshop), again returning deadly results; Own You is a big, fat, fuck-off slice of neurofunk heat. The beautifully cinematic intro sets the scene, but nothing can prepare ears (or feet) for when the lush melodics fall away; dropping into a perfectly crafted, minimal reese groove. Crisp sound design and excellent use of space give the track serious weight, with enough air to let the funk breathe, but enough coarse, hard tech to get your face melting. This one’s a masterclass in producing modern sounding, interesting neuro, from the fizzing basses to the insane drum programming, it’s guaranteed to switch up any set and pop it off.
and finally their freebie, Again, is the dark horse of the release, a standout track in that it marks a departure from the heavy tech sound VC have become known for. More like a deep liquid cut, this track oozes emotion and attitude, from a warm, ambient set-up, it drops into a rich, deep and rolling beat, a fuzzy filtered reese pushing the low melodic line, while a live-sounding drum break clatters and shuffles over the top. Still present is some thoughtful bass design, interjecting and adding that VC flavour to the tune, and it’s still got a dark, brooding vibe. An unusual addition to the boys catalogue no doubt, but we think you’ll agree an incredibly listenable one.
