Description

I watched his eyes
ever so trusting
gaze up at me
eyes full of love
now glazed beneath
an anesthetic film.

I stroked his head
and whispered
sounds of calm
to gently guide him
to his long, long sleep

A feeble wiggle of his legs
a sigh...so sad, and then
his old eyes closed
all trust
removed by death
but love remained

I suffered
through long moments
while his pink tongue
that once licked me,
sharing puppy kisses
turned completely black

and instantly it signaled
he was gone.
~
I cradled him
in my arms
his body
all soft, and loose
where his once
swift muscles
carried him
across endless fields
of dandelions.
~
Then I buried him
beneath his favorite tree
where he used to
love to lay
and he'll lay there now
until again
we take long walks
and race the winds
on Heaven's shores
where best friends
never die.
