The word funky
has always puzzled me
ever since it was used
so popularily
as far back as the 60’s
When it became
a description
of a genre of music
that folks thought
was cool
Before that it was just
a derogatory way
to describe smelly socks
or the stench in a john
or the mood of your lover
who was angry at you
from funky to funky
But now funky’s transcended
from all it references as poo
into something less drastic
something catchy and jazzy
all its negative meanings
have been blended into
A sound that will get
your ass up on your feet
dancing to it’s sweet rhythms
you might be dancing now
and all that you
ever thought was
simply smelly old cows
has changed your mind
with it’s vibes
Describing your
mood somehow
it’s now become
your new favorite
cause it’s got
you getting down.
funky’s been elevated
to a place it will stay
far away from bad cheese
or any scent of decay
It is cool to be funky
it makes musicians money
it can help you woo your honey
and it gets crowds acting spunky
even guys who look frumpy
long as they don’t smell skunky
can be looked on as funky
they might even get lucky
find some gal and get cuddly
end up being a hubby
of a girl who loves funky
Funky’s not a quick study
if your hoping to play it
you should probably delay it
till you hear some bands who
have mastered funky’s grooves
Then just copy their style
till your own skills kick in
then let loose, play it wild
and you’ll too be funking
On your guitar a strumming
or on a piano plunking
or a saxophone puffing
you’ll make funky from nothing
and you’ll set crowds to running
to hear you the next something.
So get funky, get LOUD!
catch its moods
and be proud
that you’re funky.
