We begin life by being handled
by all of those who will
care for our needs
9 months after the
most humane touch
cause the melting of two into one
an egg and a tadpole shaped seed
and our lives are conceived
From the moment we are born
and are handed to our mothers
we learn the value of human touch
after we are thrust out of the
vacuum of the womb into
a cold and sterile room
her warm arms welcome us.
we are swaddled and changed
and fed and rocked to sleep
by the skills of human touch
eventually we learn to touch back
and we delight in the warm sensations
that it brings us each day……

We grow up together learning to hug
shake hands, slap high fives, bump fists
pat backs, interlace fingers, wave at each other
all forms of human touch that allow us
to communicate in fleshy ways.
We learn from our sexual opposites
how to share the human touch in exquisite ways
Lips coming together in the bliss of kisses
bodies offering more intimate forms of hugs
appendages becoming pleasure for empty sockets
caresses saying love in so many ways unspoken
Until the purpose of human touch is fulfilled
and we bring tiny carbon copies of ourselves
into this world and teach them too of human touch

For those who live without human touch
and those who deny it for whatever reasons
suffer the sorrows of truly being totally alone
for without touch one cannot feel very much
except loneliness and emptiness and an aching
that cannot be healed for healing requires
some form of touch from others……

From the moment a
doctor’s human touch
pulls us from the womb
to those moments our
Mothers tuck us in bed
and our father pat our
backs for achievements
to the moment we slip wedding
rings on each others fingers
or slip into the wedded bed
to the moments we
hold our own children
much in the same way
that we were held.
to that final moment when
a doctor or coroner
closes our eyes for
the final time with
a gentle human touch
we have been caught up
in the many grasps of life
and we pass on to what
lies beyond all human touch

Human touch is such an
integral part of all of our lives
reach out and touch somebody each day
it is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
Hugs are free but so many pay such
a huge price emotionally just to get even one.
